
The misconstrual of Tere Bin as romance
For as long as the genre of romance has existed, there has been this unsaid but clearly defined rule that it must have a HEA (Happily Ever After). The genre has no other purpose but to satisfy the desire for a fulfilling romance in its target audience. Till last week, Tere Bin, the wildly successful Pakistani drama, which has been breaking records on Youtube in terms of views, was doing an excellent job in this regard. The audience across South Asia was swooning over Murtasim Khan, the male lead who had charmed everyone with his romantic endeavours to win over his reluctantly wedded wife, Meerab. However with an unforeseen twist on the show last week, everything changed in a matter of minutes. It turns out the story cannot be categorised as a romance at all, because a happy ending does not seem. to be in the books, at least not a logical one.
